Press Release::Annual compliance costs for new rule lower than health impact costs

True or false: The coal industry has been pumping toxic air pollution, virtually unchecked, into our atmosphere for decades -- pollution that has been linked to cancer and countless other health issues.

This is true, but if a new standard proposed by the EPA becomes a reality, it won't be for much longer. The rule will significantly reduce the amount of mercury and other toxins that coal-fired power plants release into the air.

Making this rule the law of the land won't be easy. We'll face strong opposition from the same forces that stand in the way of solving the climate crisis. That's why we need your help.

Mercury can cause birth defects, neurological damage and countless other health problems. Some of the pollutants that this rule restricts have been linked to cancer, heart disease, asthma and bronchitis.

While industry might complain about the cost of the rule, annual compliance costs are estimated to be far less than what we pay now to address the health impacts of mercury and other pollution.

Press Release::Pollution and Environment

We must focus more on supply chains and systems if we are to reduce pollution.
We must take responsibility for the pollution created in the whole process not just our part so that
collaboratively we can impact the transportation, distribution and logisitics.
Here are five examples where we didnt respond as a system and now the cost to the environment and our health is extremely high.

Pollution comes from the cars we drive to the cleaning chemicals we use and the carpet and paint on our walls. With each decision to purchase a new product, drive your car, or use chemicals for pest control you are contributing to pollution.

•The World Health Organization states that 2.4 million people die each year from causes directly related to air pollution.  The illnesses include aggravated asthmabronchitis,  emphysema, lung and heart diseases, and respiratory allergies.

•The worst air pollutant emissions are caused by the combustion of petroleum products—diesel oil, heating oil, and heavy fuel oil. Although air pollution comes from large industrial plants, a larger source of pollution comes from transportation.

•Over the past two decades The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (aka Plastic Soup) has been accumulating in the North Pacific and is now larger than the state of Texas !  This large floating island of plastic and non-biodegradable trash is from non-recycled excessive human consumption.

•According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the U.S. has 3,091 active landfills and over 10,000 inactive municipal landfills.  Although proper measurements in most cases have been made (liner and leach ate collection system), they still leach harmful and potentially fatal toxins into the soil, water, and air.

May 23, 2011
At a May 24 telephone press conference, members of the Older Women's Economic Security (OWES) Task Force of the National Council of Women's Organizations will demand that President Obama's budget negotiations include women participants and women's views in the discussion.
Members of the media are invited to call in.
Who:Terry O'Neill, President, National Organization for Women (NOW)
Bobbie Brinegar, Executive Director, Older Women's League (OWL)
Cynthia Harrison, Vice-Chair, Women's Committee of 100
Gwendolyn Mink, Independent Policy ScholarWhat:OWES Task Force to request a meeting with President Obama and Vice President Biden to discuss ways to include women's viewpoints in the current budget discussions and to ask that members of the administration with expertise on women's issues be added to the White House's advisory team working on the budget negotiations. When:Tuesday, May 24 from 11:00 a.m. E.T. to 11:30 a.m. E.T.Call:712-432-0900; Passcode: 230489

Women are entirely absent from the meetings of the team Vice President Joe Biden has convened to address the federal budget, leaving the men behind closed doors with a real deficit in their discussions about issues critical to U.S. women, including health care and Social Security. Research has shown that women are gaining fewer jobs than men in the current economic recovery and are still suffering grave impacts from the recession; they also stand to lose disproportionately from the types of budget cuts being discussed.
Leaders of major women's organizations will call for the inclusion of women's concerns and voices in these discussions. Groups include: NOW, the Black Women's Health Imperative, the Business and Professional Women's Foundation, Dialogue on Diversity, the Older Women's League, U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce, Women's Committee of 100, Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement, the Women's Research and Education Institute, and the YWCA USA.
The National Council of Women's Organizations is composed of more than 200 women's organizations representing more than 12 million U.S. women. The Older Women's Economic Security (OWES) Task Force was formed in 1998 to study, monitor and act to enhance older women's economic security. NOW is a co-chair of the OWES Task Force.
