Our work in UAE is to accelerate the speed and scale of the country going green and sustainable. As you will see from this new chart they consume 1600% of renewable water resources. So now I am updating our focus to:

Decree 42 of 2009 sets out the COMPULSARY Environment, Health and Safety framework however, in the Middle East TIME is not considered an asset so the speed of implementation is too slow to bring about sustainability.  There is also no real understanding or appreciation of Intellectual Property or processes so transferring knowledge is skipped and people dont understand why something is important for them to learn and act on.

Queen of Green Eco-Farms and Resorts

UAE Government pay farmers grants each month yet hundreds of farms are unproductive.  Now local farmers want to modernize and collaborate on producing healthy organic crops that will feed the local communities and earn them revenue.

Queen of Green is transforming the first farm in Abu Dhabi and already 5 farms want to join. The first farm is due to open in Sept 2011 and will include herbs, fruit, vegatables, and other fresh produce.

There are 8,500 farms in Western Region, 3,000 in Abu Dhabi and 12,00 in Al Ain.

In November 2011 the Eco-resort will be added where for 200 aed per night you can sleep under the stars in a canvass tent with sweet water shower and compost toilets.  An ideal weekend away for a couple or family with mothers and children staying mid-week.  Eco-tourism is a new sector for the Abu Dhabi market that will grow as tourists demand more environmentally-friendly tourism options.

Queen of Green Eco-Farms and Resorts are ideal for local farmers and landowners to generate revenue from their land. Faith-based groups and minorities want to start social businesses but often do not have access to capital that hotel and resort developers have.

Farmers and land owners in Australia, Bangladesh, india, Pakistan, UAE and Yemen are preparing their land to collaborate with Queen of Green.

The Central Bank is working on a new liquidity requirements system for the country’s commercial banks, prompted by their solid capital base and the latest Basel 3 adequacy rules for banks worldwide.

In its first quarter bulletin released this week, the central bank said the 51 banks operating in the UAE generally control an adequacy ratio that far exceeds the Basel 3 Tier 1 requirement of a minimum seven per cent for all banks, with their combined Tier 1 adequacy reaching 16.1 per cent at the end of March.

Their general capital adequacy stood at 20.7 per cent following an eight per cent increase in the banks’ shareholders equity to nearly Dh278.6 billion, it said, adding that the level is far above the 12 per cent floor set by the central bank for the country’s 23 national banks and 28 foreign units in June 2010.

The report said the high adequacy level shows banks in the UAE, the second largest Arab economy after Saudi Arabia, enjoy a “solid and strong” capital base that allows them to “ease the burden of allocating more loan loss provisions.”

“Tier 1 adequacy for UAE banks is estimated at 16.1 per cent……this means they enjoy an adequacy that surpasses international requirements… in this respect, the central bank is currently working on devising a new system that will define liquidity for banks in the country,” it said.

The report said the banks’ large capital allows them to maintain their ability to lend to the public and private sectors, adding that domestic credit picked up by around 1.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2011 to reach Dh1,048 billion compared with 0.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2010.

“This is a reasonable increase considering the weak demand for credit by local companies and the careful lending policy adopted by banks,” it said.

The report showed personal loans edged up by only around 0.3 per cent to Dh247.9 billion to reach nearly 24 per cent of total credit. Loans to the government rose by about 2.7 per cent while those to the private sector by around 0.3 per cent. Mortgage credit dipped by 1.3 per cent.

At the end of the first quarter of 2011, the combined assets of UAE banks surged by about Dh90 billion to Dh1,696 billion from Dh1,606 billion at the end of the first quarter of 2010, the figures showed.

100 million unemployed youth need a new entrepreneurial framework

The youth generation in MENA are educated, frustrated and angry as the educational promises were not paralelled with economic growth and jobs.  No government in the world can create jobs for all its citizens and even a thriving private sector can not create for all. It is time for the third way..mass collabortion across the region with youth starting micro-enterprises and employing themselves, serving their community and growing new markets 'bottom up'
